I’ll never forget the time I ate a cookie at a school event, and someone whispered, “Guess you’re having a cheat day, huh?” I laughed it off, but inside, it had me thinking…

Since when did food become a moral issue?

As educators, we’re already under enough pressure—our relationship with food shouldn’t add to the stress. Let’s break free from diet culture’s myths and learn to enjoy sweets without guilt.

The 3 Biggest Lies Diet Culture Wants You to Believe

❌ Lie #1: "Sugar is your enemy."
✅ Truth: Sure, too much sugar isn’t ideal, but an occasional sweet won’t wreck your health. Constant restriction can trigger binge cycles or yo-yo dieting, making balance hard to find.

The key? Enjoy that donut if you choose to eat it, with no guilt. When we can make a mindful decision, we are free to eat or not eat foods as we please.

❌ Lie #2: "You need to earn your treats."
✅ Truth: Linking food to punishment or reward creates toxic cycles.

You don’t need to “burn off” your dessert with extra gym time or heavy restrictions for the next 24 hours.

Food should be enjoyed for what it is—fuel, pleasure, or both—not used as a reward system for eating good this week.

❌ Lie #3: "Cheat days are necessary."
✅ Truth: Cheat days set up restrictive thinking and backfire by fueling cravings.

Instead, give yourself permission to enjoy sweets whenever you want. This leads to more mindful eating and helps you develop a healthier relationship with food.

Life is too short to obsess over every calorie or deny yourself the things you enjoy. Whether it's a treat with your students after a long day or just enjoying dessert at home, sweets don’t have to come with guilt attached.
