Here’s What NOT to Do if You Want to Reduce Stress

Hello Educators!

Welcome to the TeacherFit Newsletter, a weekly newsletter providing practical tips and actionable steps that help you lower stress, increase energy and be your best self in and out of the classroom!

We all know that stress can be overwhelming, especially in our demanding profession. It can feel like there’s no escape, but how we manage that stress makes all the difference. To help you find relief, here are some common pitfalls to avoid when dealing with stress.

DON’T Bottle Up Your Emotions 😶

It’s tempting to keep your stress to yourself, but this only causes it to build up over time, leading to more significant issues down the line. Instead, talk it out with someone you trust—a friend, colleague, or counselor. Even journaling can be a healthy outlet. Sharing your feelings lightens the emotional load and offers new perspectives on your challenges.

DON’T Overload Your Schedule 📅

Taking on too much at once? It’s a quick path to burnout. While it’s natural to want to be everything to everyone (especially in the world of education!), remember that your time and energy are limited. Learn to say no to extra tasks that aren’t essential, and focus on what truly matters. Prioritizing your workload can help you maintain balance and reduce unnecessary stress. As much as you don’t want to let others down, first and foremost, make sure you aren’t letting yourself down.

DON’T Neglect Physical Activity 🏃‍♂️

When stress is high, exercise often becomes the first thing to go—but this is precisely when you need it most. Physical activity is one of the best ways to reduce stress, clear your mind, and boost your mood. Even a short walk or quick strength training session can make a significant difference. Don’t let stress keep you from moving your body; make it a priority instead.

DON’T Rely on Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms 🍷

It’s easy to turn to unhealthy habits like junk food or alcohol when you’re stressed, but these quick fixes can lead to more problems in the long run. Instead, try to find healthier ways to unwind, like reading, meditating, or engaging in a hobby you love. These activities can help you relax without adding to your stress.
