Ever feel like you’re starting from scratch when it comes to health goals? You’re not alone.

When I first started teaching, I thought I needed these intense routines to stay healthy. I’d spend hours in the gym and more hours meal prepping.

It worked for a bit, but eventually, the long hours caught up with me. I’d fall out of my routine and be right back to where I started. Sound familiar?

Many of us dive in hard and fast—0 to 100—only to realize that those intense routines don’t fit well with the day-to-day demands of teaching. We’re motivated, but as soon as life gets busy (and in teaching, when isn’t it busy?), that plan starts to slip.

So, how do we make our wellness routines sustainable and actually stick with them?

Here’s what I’ve learned:

📝 Start Small and Achievable

Building new habits is a marathon, not a sprint. Pick something you know you can do 99 times out of 100—something that feels manageable on even the busiest of days.

Not only is this sustainable, but it also gives you the satisfaction of consistency which helps build momentum to keep going.

🤏 Simple Habits That Make a Difference

Here are a few ideas that have worked wonders for me and my schedule. You don’t need hours in the gym or a fully prepped kitchen to feel better. Start with one of these:

  • Walk for 10 Minutes: Whether it’s a quick walk around the building during lunch or a few laps in the neighborhood, moving for just 10 minutes can give you a mental break and boost your energy. It also builds the identity habit of making movement a regular part of every day!

  • 15-Minute Strength Training: Keep it simple. Try bodyweight exercises or a short routine with dumbbells. Just 15 minutes of strength training builds muscle, boosts metabolism, and supports overall health.

  • 10-Minute Meal Prep: Think quick, nutritious meals that don’t take a lot of time. Scrambled eggs, a smoothie, or a sandwich with fresh veggies—whatever keeps you fueled and happy without hours in the kitchen.

🎯 Why This Works

When these small actions become habits, you start building momentum. Before long, these 10 or 15 minutes add up, creating consistency in your routine without needing to overhaul your life.

From there, you can increase the time or add more activities if you want. But if not, that’s okay too. What matters is that you’ve found a plan that fits your life as an educator and makes you feel good.

Over time, these small, sustainable actions lead to big results. And the best part? No more stopping and starting. Just real, lasting progress.
