Summer Break Success: Building Sustainable Routines and Habits
Hello Educators!
Welcome to the TeacherFit Newsletter, a weekly newsletter providing practical tips and actionable steps that help you lower stress, increase energy and be your best self in and out of the classroom!
As you enjoy the well-deserved summer break, it’s the perfect time to set new routines and habits that will benefit you throughout the year. The key to long-term success is creating habits that are sustainable, even when the school year resumes. Here are some practical tips to help you build routines that last:
Start Small and Simple: Begin with small, manageable changes that can easily fit into your summer schedule. For instance, commit to a 10-minute morning stretch or a short walk after dinner. These small steps will help you build a foundation for more significant changes without overwhelming yourself.
Consistency is Key: Focus on consistency rather than intensity. Choose activities that you can realistically maintain every day, such as reading for 15 minutes before bed or drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning. Consistency builds lasting habits that are easier to stick with when your schedule gets busy.
Blend New Habits with Existing Routines: Incorporate new habits into your existing routines to make them more sustainable. For example, while brewing your morning coffee, practice a quick mindfulness exercise. Pairing new habits with established ones creates a seamless transition and makes them easier to remember.
Allow Flexibility: Life can be unpredictable, so it’s essential to allow flexibility in your routines. If you miss a day or need to adjust your schedule, don’t be too hard on yourself. The goal is progress, not perfection. Be adaptable and find ways to get back on track without feeling discouraged.
Plan for the School Year: As you establish your summer routines, think about how they will fit into your schedule during the school year. Choose habits that are adaptable to your teaching routine. For instance, if you enjoy a midday meditation, plan a short session during lunch breaks once school starts.
